A finely honed delusion

After 9/11, every paradigm on foreign issues so beloved by the Left was literally in ruins. Their sparking brains cast around desperately and finally settled on the delusion that there is no real threat to Western civilization, that all of this is the result of our own actions, and that basically, George W. Bush is the root of the problem. Get rid of him, and it all goes away.

There is no "global war on terror." There is no widespread Islamic threat. Saddam was a harmless kitten. The terrorists still in our own borders are bumbling clowns. Pull our armies out of Iraq and Afghanistan and the bad guys will disappear, and never bother the U.S. again.

The only problem is with ourselves, and especially the leadership.

You see, you can say anything about Bush. Spit on his picture, call him names, deride him in the media, treat him like crap on national television. Nothing will happen to you. It's like beating on a stuffed effigy of a bear. Nice and safe. And you can push the real enemy out of your mind--the one who will try to kill you for a disrespectul book or cartoon.

The psychosis is illustrated in this poll.

When asked if Bush knew about the 9/11 attacks in advance, 35 percent of Democrats said yes, and 26 percent were "not sure."

A growing part of the developing delusion scrubs the radical Islamists out of the picture entirely.
