You see ER, with Tom it doesn't matter what your real life experiences are if they differ from the statistics found on some right wing think tank website.
What keeps me going with all the turmoil and outsourcing going on in the IT world is that I know I don't have to work in IT to put food on the table. I've worked as an electrician, built and repaired recreational vehicles, worked in the sports and health industry, done clerical work, carpentry, plumbing, auto mechanics, apartment maintenance and sales work. I know that if it comes down to having to find income I'll do what's necessary.
Just remember that you and I grew up in an era where an overwhelmingly strong work ethic was something everyone stuggled to attain. It will always win in the end over today's entitlement bunch. The only trick is getting that info to the people doing the hiring. Worst case is starting lower in the order than you deserve and flying up the ladder by pure will.
It's just a matter of not being scared of starting over and allowing your self confidence to shine through.
