...I'm in no way arguing with you. I have a positive perception of Al Gore at the moment, one that I hope won't be destroyed by the revelation that Al has feet of clay. Most important, I think, is that if he's serious about competing on a level intellectual playing field, it's not necessary for me to commit right now. He's eschewing manufactured consent, "bandwagon politics" and organized manipulation, so I think I'll take him at face value and see how his intellectual arguments develop.
That's also consistent with the possible timing of Gore's hypothetical stealth campaign for President. If he makes a move at all, it would be late in the election cycle, quite possibly after the Party conventions, as an independent. I have a hard time imagining Gore as the Democratic nominee, since the Party machinery and the Party's annointed front-runners would all be aligned against him. The fix will be in by then, the deals done, and Gore would only upset the applecart. His best chance, I think, is for the two parties to nominate the usual minor variations on the same tired old theme, for the American people to be once again disappointed and feeling as if we once again have to choose the lesser evil...and Gore to the rescue. His timing will have to be exquisite to pull it off. It's admittedly a longshot.
