Lou Dobbs is a pretty good suggestion. He seems a bit fixated on immigration, though, and so I wonder how he'd do in a general debate about wide-open topics.
O'Reilly? Sorry, I have trouble swallowing that choice. I've watched the guy in action, and by no stretch of the imagination in any way shape or form could Bill O'Reilly be considered an intellectual. He comes across as the opposite, a vicious demagogue who fires off barrages of anti-intellectual invective to try to prevent thought.
Of course, the premise of an open marketplace of ideas is that anyone can compete, and entry doesn't require somebody like me to first pass judgment. If O'Reilly and Gore went head-to-head, I'd be glued to the tube in fascination. It'd more likely be a bloodbath than Lincoln-Douglass, but I think that part of the process of restoring intellectual debate to American politics is the necessity of kicking some demagogic ass. Bring 'em on!
Good seeing you too, Marcia.
