I detail some of my own insurance history in a post further down. For the past several years, my wife's employer has been the source of our insurance. Before that, I paid for insurance on the open market, with my wife covered under a state high-risk program. Fortunately, large group insurance policies, like the kinds provided by big employers, are less grumpy about pre-existing conditions than individual policies are.
Nowadays, health insurance costs are tax deductible for self-employed people. Wasn't the case back when I was doing that, unfortunately.
It's too bad we got onto the track of employer-provided health insurance in this country (back around WWII). I suspect things would have worked out better if people had been getting individual policies all these years on the open market, as with almost every other kind of insurance, but that horse left the barn a long time ago, and I'm not sure it could be reversed.
