My wife had a seizure on our Europe trip from the heat (summer of 2003). We were in northern Italy at the time, and spent a night at a hospital. Great treatment, nice people, and a lot of language difficulty (I got a lot of sympathy for non-English speakers in my country).
I would normally have had to pay a lot for it, but had purchased, almost as a "what the hell" afterthought, an extra insurance rider for the trip, and the whole thing, test, ambulance ride, and all, didn't cost me a nickel. We were hauled in a frigging TAXI to Rome to meet our kids there, and that was free, too.
Going on a tour? Buy that extra insurance. You won't regret it.
You hear a lot about rude Europeans, but all the time I (an obvious American) was there, at the height of the Iraq invasion, I was never treated with anything but friendliness and good manners. Even in France!
