McFly, Moore is not only a marvelous documentary maker and researcher but he's also a keen marketer and entertainer and knows how to play to the heart strings. I know that going into an MM movie and take his viewpoints with the same grain of salt that I would any other film that intends to make a point.
I would never ask anyone to see one of his films with their critical eye shut and you nailed it. Most of the scenes of other country's health care experiences are on the good side. His foray into Cuba was the toughest to take because I know that they knew he was coming and put out the red carpet.
That said however, there are simply scenes and emotions you cannot fake and the man has the ability to pull the irony out of everyone he comes into contact with. He also has the knack of finding all the loopholes that his opposition would come up with and plugging them with some experience or visual that cements his viewpoints.
I knew going into this film that our health care system was broken irretrievably and that the only answer is some form of universal coverage for all citizens so Moore didn't convert me. He simply introduces you to the worst of the US and the best of the rest of the world as he should. If, like me he believes that the answer lies somewhere between the US system and others, he is a nearly lone voice going up against incredible opposition, money, and power. He doesn't have to be balanced. His opponents will see to that. They would attack with full force regardless of his fairness.
There are no lobbyists on the public health care side of the issue with any real clout in Washington. It's a rigged game and to bring the debate to the center, people like Moore are needed to engage the masses.
I hope you enjoy the film. I have no doubts that anyone with an open mind will have their thoughts provoked while being entertained. I would also hope they are a bit humbled by our greed and excess.
