Talk is cheap, Art.

Laying here in the comfortable hammock of the United States, you have no idea what you would really do if the shit hit the fan. You and the others braying about losses of civil liberties never realize that if any of what you were saying was remotely true, you would not be braying any more. Dumping on Bush is easy, and you do it precisely because you know damn well your "Amerikkka" scenario is a load of crap. If you seriously believed totalitarianism was down the road, I doubt you'd be spreading this stuff all over the internet.

It doesn't take courage to go after Bush. It's like attacking a straw dummy. You want to see some guts, look at those willing to take on the radical Muslims in the press and elsewhere.

Not one of us knows what we would really do if the knock came to the door and it was a choice between heroism and your family. We all hope we would do the right thing, but I have listened to, and seen, too many people from such societies who found when it came down to the bone that survival often meant shutting up, going along, avoiding attention, and averting their eyes. I have never lived in such a place, and I do not consider myself to be in a position to accuse such people of cowardice.

Don't tell me what you would do when the rat cage was put on your face. I'm honest enough to admit I don't know either. I'll tell you one thing for free: If that day ever comes, it's a lot more likely to be from those we are fighting than our own government.

I have ideas on what to do if things get rough. More realistic near-term scenarios involve long-term power outages, natural disasters, a breakdown in law, and a population trained by society and their government for two generations to believe that if someone has something you don't, and you want it, you have a right to take it from them. Most of these ideas involve finding a safe place for my family and laying low.

I sit here and listen to people telling me how life was better under Saddam, and how it's good to live in Cuba and get free medical care. And now you want to lecture me about morality and totalitarianism?
