Your determined attempt to rationalize away the damage Bush and his Republican cohorts have done to the Constitution is a sufficient answer. Denial and redefinition and reframing won't make the problem go away.
It's a waste of time to catalog the transgressions of Bush and his Republican allies against the Constitution. You'll try to minimize them, or pretend that they're not what they clearly are. Signing statements, warrantless wiretaps, suspension of habeaus corpus, refusal to submit to Congressional oversight...none of these things represent a threat to the Constitution in the mind of a partisan Republican.
Latter day Republicans have developed a strong authoritarian streak. It was Nixon who told David Frost that "when the president does it, that means that it is not illegal." Nixon was brought down by Watergate, but his entire Administration was testimony to that toxic philosophy, from the illegal break-ins of doctor's offices to attempts to suppress publication of the Pentagon Papers to the illegal invasions of Laos and Cambodia.
Jerry Ford was a model of rectitude, but the next Republican President, Ronald Reagan, expressed his contempt for the Constitution and rule of law in the Iran-Contra "affair". How dare Congress pass a law limiting the power of the President!
Your Glorious Leader George W. Bush has surpassed all of his predecessors, given the golden opportunity of 9/11 to impose an authoritarian-conservative mindset on America. "Trust the government! The government will keep you safe! Vote Republican or die!".
Heinlein must be rolling over in his grave to see all you fair-weather "free men" abandon your principles and run to the sheltering arms of Daddy Government when the going gets tough.
Can you say "cowardice in the face of the enemy"?
It's inconceivable that America could fall to physical attack by terrorists. But America can fall, and has come close to falling under Republican rule, when too many Americans allow themselves to be scared into surrendering their rights and principles and values to authoritarians.
