Prostitution has always been legal.

Historical anecdote: It is said that the whores of Hellenistic Ephesus scratched "Follow me" on the soles of their sandals so their patrons could see their advertising in the dust of the streets.

Except for the last 200-odd years when it was declared immoral by Victorian mores and religious zealots. And those who led the drive to criminalize it were often those most eager to patronize the enterprises and individual entrepreneurs that offered these services. This is why the seller is often prosecuted, while the buyer rarely is. Victorian times were the most hypocritical of all, where child brothels flourished in British cities while the sanctimonius were doing everything they could to shut them down--but of course, never with too much success.

This long-despised yet ubiquitous aspect of urban existence has always brought out hypocrisy and misogyny, and from the looks of some of these posts, it appears our enlightened age is not too much diifferent.
