re: given our culture's increasing lack of moral underpinnings.

What you really mean there is "given our culture's increasing lack of my moral underpinnings. "

The highest murder rate our country ever had was in the 1800s. The highest rate of corporate corruption? late 19th century early 20th. Probably the same is true for political corruption.

If people would stop inventing things to be illegal because they don't like them (Drugs, and as ER points out above, prostitution), we would probably have the most harmonious and peaceful civilization we have ever had.

Looking at western civilization with values inured in the past (I would say the bronze age) yields a view of contemporary times that of course reeks of decay. But you have to buy the argument that yesterdays morality was somehow better. I disagree. The world of the past was a dark violent repressive place and we should no more cling to the moral system that organized it that way than we should cling to the steam engine and pre-scientific medicine.
