There's a reason snake oil salesman is such a derogatory name. Sure people take drugs a little too nonchalantly due to a "FDA" gaurantee of safety, but unregulated drugs were far far worse. We still have all kinds of people experimenting with unregulated drugs today outside of FDA perview and I'm not talking about for recreation. People are suckers for the latest diet supplement. The FDA also does followup testing and holds people accountable for good manufacturing practices. All the crap we've been getting from China shows the risks of a lack of regulation. As a Chem E with additional background in biochemistry there is absolutely no way I'd support abolishing the FDA. Utter nonsense like that is why I think "government is the problem" types are crack pots. Humans are not perfect and neither are any of their constructs, but that doesn't justify throwing the baby out with the bath water. I'm all for a good house cleaning though. Most of the problems you mention do exist to some degree. I am not for balancing society through law suits however, we have too many that tie up people who have done little to nothing wrong with no intent of doing wrong.
Regards,
Mark
