I have a lot more control over my relations with even the most powerful businesses than I do with the government. I don't worry about Bill Gates taking my money by force, making me buy certain products, or outlawing products he doesn't think I should use.
The government has no competitors, writes the laws on how business is done, and has the authorized power to use force. Objectively, there's no contest at all as to where the most potential for abuse lies, and as I pointed out before, history backs me to the hilt.
Other than my local council members and some propositions, my vote hasn't counted for anything since I moved to California. Stop and think about how much of what the government does is really directly "answerable" to you or any other voter. How many of the people in power in Washington did you vote for? Most of them aren't even elected positions.
Anyway, redistricting tricks, campaign finance rules, and other fixes are so firmly in place that for most of America, representation is decided almost solely at the primary level, and even there unseating a long-standing incumbent is nearly impossible.
Incidentally, if you have overlords--or mobs--that can legally decide whether someone's wealth is "deserved" or not, then you no longer live in a free country.
