<Clear and Present would be Sadam caught in the act of trying to deploy WMD against USA or an ally.
The most common sign that someone is "trying" to deploy a WMD is a flash and a detonation, or a few hundred thousand people bleeding from their orifices. How did most of us find out that terrorists were "trying" to hijack aircraft and fly them into buildings? In real life (so to speak), if Greedo had shot first, Chewbacca would be scraping Han Solo's brains off the bar walls.
"Everyone talks about the dangers of war. Nobody talks about the equally possible dangers of leaving Saddam alone."
Again, I am not advocating he be left alone, just kept in a little box. So far its worked for more than a decade.
Ask the people of Iraq how well sanctions have worked. And they have done nothing to stop development of weapons. If Saddam has been sitting still before the U.S. moved in, it's because he thought he wasn't ready to make a move yet, not because he was concerned about the wrath of the U.N.
"Apparently, a madman possessing weapons of mass destruction, and who has actually used them before, does not seem to fill the bill as dangerous. I find this particularly hilarious coming from a number of people who are also convinced that no private American citizen should own a gun lest he someday shoot someone with it. "
When will you give this up, Tom? I am armed and pro firearms, and I've told you that 100 times. Are you trying to argue with me or the people who are not here?
You among a very few white crows in the flock as far as being a pro-gun liberal, and you know it, although judging by how badly anti-gun Democratic candidates do among their own constituents, there may be a lot more pro-gun Democrats than I think there are. Anyway, I wasn't referring to you. It was just an aside, and I should have made it more clear.
Tom, as I said and proved in my post to tech1, there are MANY WMD armed madmen in this world who hate us. We killed several of Quack-dalfi's family, and he hates us with blood rage and he has WMD. Why are we not drawing a bead on Libya, Syria the rest of them?
Quaddafi (sp) had the fear of Allah put into him by Reagan's attacks, and has been pretty quiet ever since. I suspect he's assisting terrorists under the table, just like Syria, and even Saudi Arabia, but none of them are trying to build nukes, and one thing at a time. North Korea's next for the front burner I would say. The rest will have to stand in line. With any luck, if the example of Iraq is made, Iraq may be the last time we need to send in the Marines.
BTW, good to have you on board here. A lot of really good posts!
