If you're talking about the Great White Hope of the Left, Bill Clinton WAS playing the part. The first person who was even close to being a child of the sixties to become President, he was supposed to bring all the values and ideals of that time into government. He played the part perfectly, with skilled oratory and marketing (remember the saxophone bit on TV?) The liberals invested a lot emotionally in this guy, and he convinced a lot of moderates to vote for him twice. No mean feat.

When he finally turned out to be a better-looking version of Boss Hogg, the Left quite understandably did not want to blame themselves for being suckered. Some blamed Clinton. Most blamed the Republicans and other conservatives for revealing the truth.

And Clinton still has a big say in the Democratic Party, which says something about either Clinton, the party, or both.
