Saddams use of WMD: Gulf War Syndrome is evidence he may have indeed used WMD on US forces.
Thats very tough to argue. The DOD, the current admin and most medical studies of the phenomena strongly state that it doesn't really exist (which I don't know, 'cause I knew one vet who had the symptoms and it sure looked real)
If GWS is WMD induced, it is likely that particular incident when a detachment blew up the storage vaults of a bunch of WMD upwind of a about 100,000 us troops.
"The US will succeed and the middle east will be more prosperous and democratic than it has ever been. Women's rights, quality of life and security for the region will be unparalleled."
I hope you are right, but it still won't change or block the damage done to our rep. Foreign policy and popular opinion OFTEN are not rational and fact-driven.
"What nation is the moral standard bearer we have to look up to? France? Germany? Russia! China! The Sultan of Brunei? I know all about Hitler and the Nazis and the US effort to replace Saddam is not even CLOSE to a Nazi invasion circa '39."
Notice, I don't draw an equivalence- but the world does. So this argument really does not bear on what I had to say.
"We are taking care of business where it is practical, from North Africa to North Korea"
I doubt it. China will start throwing nukes if we decide to pitch a war on it doorstep.
"What nation is the moral standard bearer we have to look up to? France? Germany? Russia! China! "
Ask yourself, though, if we have no traction for diplomacy or highground at the UN, AND we have set precedent for the righteousness of unilateral preemptive military force when national interests are roused, HOW THE HELL do we keep china out of TaiWan? This is a very important question nobody is answering.
Yep, Tech1- Part of me would like to see this war take place. I hate saddam and what saddam is doing to his people. But again, this will do grave damage to our global image and our ability to wield power.
Respectfully, I don't see how anything you have said here mitigates my concerns about that damage, nor convincingly demonstrates that Iraq is a clear and present danger- so much so that it is above Libya, Syria, Jordan, Egypt, North Korea and even China. Stomping Iraq will have negative impact on how we keep those nations at bay and in-line.
