"But to say these little groups are anywhere close to a position of major influence in the movement as a whole is ridiculous. "
Tom. You have NO IDEA what the accurate categorization and distribution of views is over individuals, and only a vague notions of the distribution of groups. Groups may have leadership with agendas not matched by the donators or average group members, and Vs-a-Vs. Loud Idiots abound everywhere, and everywhere the smart folks are quietly making decisions off of reasons that DON'T have anything to do with those of the loud dumb folks. You CAN'T estimate the percentages here.
What You DO do, I hazard to guess, is hone in on those preaching a gospel that you are afraid of/find offensive/is absurd so that you can use this as some representative of "most" of the "environamental movement", so that you can cast your own views against a Strawman and feel better about the veracity of your views. Most smart people I know stopped doing this in their 20's or late teens. When I was 16/17 I used to do this with the religious right... But I grew up, you should too (you are what, in your early 40's?).
Give me a break. If you wanna act dumb, don't ask me to agree with you or 'validate' your dumb ad hoc quasi-universal statements- just go ahead and act dumb... In otherwords: at least be honest and dumb.
" 80 percent of people say that 90 percent of people are a$$holes"
"There are just two types of people in this world. Those who say there are just two types of people and those who don't"
