Suspects' rights vs. protecting the innocent

Let's remember that the suspects are also innocent until proven guilty. If you will use the vocabulary of justice, you must use all of it.

This doesn't preclude protective measures. I lock my doors. I don't shoot people who yell obscenities at me from the street, even though I find them threatening. We failed to use the locks on the doors we had already installed prior to 9/11, and to make up for the home invasion that resulted, we started shooting at people in houses across the street from our front porch because they are related to the home invaders.

But we're stuck with it now. Arguing over whether we should or shouldn't be in Iraq is actually an argument over the competence and motives of our current Administration. We have to be there now. We have to clean up the mess we made at an absolute minimum. If our name is not to be mud for the next 50 years or so, we will have to deliver on the promise of a "new Iraq", even though it becomes more apparent every day that the Abracadabra approach taken by the Administration is inadequate.

Fortunately, it appears that the military has given this some thought independent of their civilian leaders' directives. Noodling around The Urban Operations Journal, I found this list of General Zinni's on Military Operations Other Than War. Perhaps the President will read it some day.

Mary Anne
