re: Burning down the house

"In other words, the man on parole who allows the police into his house to search for weapons has every reason to expect they will search and none to expect a SWAT team to firebomb the house."

The function of inspectors is not searching houses for weapons. But since we doing an analogy, the police are being restricted in where you can look in the house, and aren't allow to search the guy's car. It's a very difficult task to verify that a country does not have WMD- cooperation is required. To continue the analogy "the man on parole" is suppose to declare all weapons he has built or bought, these weapons are then gather up & documented by "the police" then destroyed. The equipment used to make the weapons can be kept if "peaceful things" are made with this equipment. What is important is what "the man on parole" will do in the future as far as having or acquiring weapons- we don't want an entire police station montioring this guy forever, rather perhaps a couple of police check in every week or so. In Iraq we wanted to get to the point of no longer needing "No Fly Zones" and sanctions.

"This is not about him. It's not about other members of the international community. It's about us. Who are we becoming? Do we want to pay attention or not? We can walk through the world wrapped in our flag if we choose. I refuse to have it wrapped around my head."

It's not about a flag, it's about the Rule of Law. In general terms we want cease fire agreements or any international agreements to be followed. And when I say agreements I don't mean a situation where country A and country B make "agreements" about Country C. Remember, we don't "believe in" taxation without representation. We follow our international agreements. And the definition according to our Constitution of "our international agreements" are treaties which are ratified by the Senate. The number of countries who sign some agreement is meanless as far as defining "our international agreements" as per our Constitution. This isn't about Flag, we are required to follow the Constitution- we have agreed to be Ruled by Law.
