Burning down the house

The big deal made was that the US was justified in invading because the UN inspectors, who had already been readmitted under threat of arms, hadn't found anything yet.

I'm not saying that Saddam is a truthful, misunderstood man. I'm not saying he's a good man, or a kind man, or an honorable man. I'm not saying he didn't need the credible threat of armed force to get his attention, let alone co-operation. What I'm saying is, once he began to allow what he was obliged to allow, that reason for invading Iraq evaporated. In other words, the man on parole who allows the police into his house to search for weapons has every reason to expect they will search and none to expect a SWAT team to firebomb the house.

This is not about him. It's not about other members of the international community. It's about us. Who are we becoming? Do we want to pay attention or not? We can walk through the world wrapped in our flag if we choose. I refuse to have it wrapped around my head.
