LOL -- aw, why not?

They tend to say two or more things inside the same phrase, and offer me a flexibility your question begs to allow.

But you're lucky: I don't write poetry.

Reaching... reaching...

~Tell the essential truth, even if you cannot tell the exact truth; do not expect it from others.

~Set the example you wish to see enacted around you.

~Leave a place better than you found it if possible, and at least no worse.

~Do not become the thing you hate.

~Never willfully harm a child.

~Cycles repeat in some way; learn from this.

~You must take responsibility for your actions even if you are not responsible for your situation.

~Life is absurd, so laughter is good.

and

~If ever you hear a small voice whisper in your ear over your left shoulder, listen to it. The Prophets live in us all.

That's it. I guess.

And yes, I don't live up to them always. Maybe even not mostly. So I guess there's one other, a homely and well-known saw:

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.
