They never dump the toxic waste in wealthy neighborhoods.

If you had a 10th-grade education at a school only as good as your parents could afford -- which, living in a run-down neighborhood, wasn't that good -- and you had a laborer's job, would you take the chance and buy from a grocery store at which only some of the customers had died from food poisoning? Would you even have read the newspaper accounts of their deaths?

Let me tell you something, sir: there's already a self-policing professional health organization operating in this country. It's called the AMA. They do pursue excellence. They also cover up for their malpracticing colleagues until the problem becomes too difficult to conceal, partly to avoid tarnishing the profession. (For an example of how this doesn't work, see the Archdiocese of Boston. But today's justice is a paltry reward for the young victims.) My great-aunt lost her mobility and her health to a doctor whose colleagues knew had a drinking problem. The addict had to leave town, but I'll bet you he hung out his shingle somewhere else. And of course, malpractice insurance has gone through the roof. I wonder why.

Self-policing isn't half what it's cracked up to be.
