Sophistry will get you nowhere

Sophistry: noun - 1. Plausible but fallacious argumentation. 2. A plausible but misleading or fallacious argument.

therefore if two people are fighting to the death and only fatal force can stop it...

which begs the question of "plausible", by the way... Two beserkers so intent on killing each other that the only way to stop them is to kill at least one? Not bloody likely.

... you should not do anything because no judgement can be made as to which is more deserving to live by your basic principle

By my basic principle, they would not be fighting to the death in the first place.

However... if they will not stop long enough to explain why they're engaged in this fatal duel, and (under the conditions you imposed) mistaken prejudgement may lead to a wrongful death anyway, it is expedient to allow the fight to conclude, then arrest and try the winner. Either the killing was justified (self-defense from a prior aggression), or it was murder.
