Hardly Zen
I'm no zen expert, but I never thought he was a pessimist. While you make some good points and I sometimes feel a similar kind of dispair I always consider it a weakness on my part. Nothing good comes from negative thinking of that sort. Murphy's law on the other hand is a basis for optimism. Define what can go wrong then eliminate it!
