How qualified would you be to defend a controversial book written by someone else, on short notice, that you'd perhaps read once, twice at most? Would you be able to stand up to a cross examination on the host who wrongly seized on a point and kept interrupting you when you tried to point out that it was the FRIGGIN BOOK MAKING THE CLAIM? Is it really so hard for you to understand?

Matthews, like the pompus asshat that he is, had not read the book, but he expected a 3rd party to defend it. Did he take the same approach when he finally interviewed O'Neil several days later? I'm trying to find a transcript of that interview. O'Niel, being an experienced trial lawyer and the coauthor of the book, was probably better able to explain the allegations than a 3rd party.
