Accidentally wounding yourself is not a criminal offense

Deliberately wounding yourself to get out of combat can be prosecuted, but seldom was even in WWII. No one is saying Kerry did that. The allegation is that he was hit by some fragments from a grenade he'd fired too close to himself. Think of it as a form of "friendly fire" and you'll be in the right ballpark. It happens fairly often because grenade fragments can travel a long distance and they're completely indiscriminate.

Chris Mathews jumped on Michelle Malkin when she mentioned this allegation from the book "Unfit for Command"*. Mathews, who had not read the book and is, to put it charitably, very uninformed about the military, jumped on this statement and began baggering Malkin, eventually throwing her off the show. He was repeating the same lie about Malkin claiming Kerry deliberately wounding himself last Wednesday night. The man is an ass.

*She had been asked on the show to discuss her own book, not the Swiftboat Vet's book. Mathews then began baggering her about someone else's book and threw her off his show.
