re: You're falling for the stereotypes

No, actually I'm falling for my own observations in life. I hold quite a distinction between lifelong Republicans who seem to have been born with a conservative philosophy and those that come upon it later in life, after their children are out of the house and no longer in public schools, after they're pretty much assured their Social Security won't run out in their lifetimes, the ones with substantial paid-off real estate holdings and locked in health insurance that have their lives taken care of for the rest of their days.

Most of the elderly keep their philosophical leanings intact, especially the ones that keep strong family ties with their younger relatives, the ones that pour themselves into their grandchildren. The turncoats I'm referring to, and it's simply a hunch that Zell Miller falls into this group, are the ones that lock themselves away into senior-only retirement communities, start thinking only of their own little world and stop feeling part of the rest of their neighbors. I think those people have more a tendency to disconnect from the responsibilities that go with living in modern society.
