re: She wasn't on the show to discuss that book at all

MATTHEWS: What do you mean by self-inflicted? Are you saying he shot himself on purpose? Is that what you‘re saying?

The answer to that question is: No. If indeed she didn't mean to insinuate or imply that.

"No" would have put an end to it. Why wouldn't she say "No"?

The rest of the transcript is comprised of her trying not to say "No". Or "Yes", which would have invited a peck of trouble. I can only conclude that she was trying really hard for "Maybe".

She was on the show to discuss her own book when Mathews sandbagged her, getting her to discuss someone else's book.

Ed has said that, too. But it's incorrect. From her own mouth, so to speak:

A few hours before the show, a producer calls to tell me I will be on for two segments--the first topic will be the Swift Boat Veterans, the second topic will be related to the book. Fine. This is the news business. I understand the need to go with the flow and cover the hot issues of the day. I am prepared to discuss both topics.

Malkin, Michelle. "Ambush Journalism...Or My Evening With Caveman Chris Matthews". 20 August 2004.

She knew why she was there, and she knew, and agreed to, a discussion of the Swift Boat Veterans several hours before the program. The only reason for her to have to defend that book was the fact that she herself brought it up within the context of that segment.

I've been wondering if all this outrage is because she's a girl and he yelled at her in spite of the fact that she's a girl. I doubt that a guy would have called him a "caveman".
