I doubt there will ever be clarity.
That he absolutely embellished and fabricated parts of his story is not debatable, and the people will judge the import of that, along with his post-Vietnam record and his Senate record in a couple of months.
Ambiguity in history is a reality.
There are still people who think FDR engineered Pearl Harbor, for example.
