BROWN: He volunteered twice. He volunteered twice in Vietnam. He literally got shot. Thereâ€˜s no question about any of those things. So what else is there to discuss? How much he got shot, how deep, how much shrapnel?

MALKIN: Well, yes. Why donâ€˜t people ask him more specific questions about the shrapnel in his leg. They are legitimate questions about whether or not it was a self-inflicted wound.

MATTHEWS: What do you mean by self-inflicted? Are you saying he shot himself on purpose? Is that what youâ€˜re saying?

MALKIN: Did you read the book...

MATTHEWS: Iâ€˜m asking a simple question. Are you saying that he shot himself on purpose.

MALKIN: Iâ€˜m saying some of these soldiers...

MATTHEWS: And Iâ€˜m asking question.

MATTHEWS: Did he shoot himself on purpose.

MALKIN: Some of the soldiers have made allegations that these were self-inflicted wounds.

MATTHEWS: No one has ever accused him of shooting himself on purpose.

MATTHEWS: Your saying there areâ€”he shot himself on purpose, thatâ€˜s a criminal act?

MALKIN: Iâ€˜m saying that Iâ€˜ve read the book and some of the...

MATTHEWS: I want an answer yes or no, Michelle.

MALKIN: Some of the veterans say...

MATTHEWS: No. No one has every accused him of shooting himself on purpose.

MALKIN: Yes. Some of them say that.

MATTHEWS: Tell me where that...

Let's recap:
"Did you read the book"
"Some of the soldiers have made allegations"
"I'm saying that I've read the book and some of the..."
"Some of the veterans say"
"Some of them say that"

Sounds like she's trying to convey what is said in the book rather than her own words. Since she was asked to discuss the book (and had actually read it, unlike Matthews), she kept referring to what was written in the book. It is patently obvious that she was talking about the claims in the book, not expressing her own opinion. In the end, how valuable would her own opinion have been, anyway? She wasn't there, never claimed to be there, and may not have even been born back in 1968.

Thanks for the transcript of O'Neil's time on Hardball. I've been looking for it for a while with no success. It makes interesting reading. I notice how Matthews keeps asking O'Neil about his voting record. It'd be interesting to have Matthews answer the same question, although I'm pretty sure what the answer is.
