Austrailia was quite a culture shock for me when our submarine pulled into Perth Harbor for a short visit. Mind you, that my other experiences with our boat arriving at some destination, was that the community generally boarded up their homes and locked up their daughters (except the Phillipines where the daughters were for sale). The reputation of Navy men, unleashed upon a community after weeks at sea looking only at other humans with stubbly beards, was well-known and well-deserved.

However, as soon as we pulled into Perth, we were told that the locals wanted to set up a Dial-A-Sailor service to try to hook up the young women on dates with the sailors aboard. Seems that Austrailian women have quite the thing for "Yanks". Further investigation uncovered that one of the motivating factors is that the American men actually paid attention to the women. We were told that the typical night out with the Austrailian men generally consisted of getting left behind when their mates would show up in the pub and the guys would all run off to drink beer together and party like animals.

Have we American men been doing it all wrong for all these years? The Aussie men certainly seemed happy. lol
