If thats directed at my prior post. This is one of the better CE threads we have had in a few years, IMHO. Up there with the Iran thread we had going recently.
Social Security has bloated far beyond its original intent, as even Roosevelt's writings indicate. That Medicare's role and costs have exploded far beyond their original projections is a matter of open record.
As long as SS provides at least a survivable floor, I am comfortable with that floor being pretty low. Its difficult to see how that modern benefits could be lower and still survivable (unless you live in a place with absurdly low Cost Of Living). So I agree with you in spirit that Roosevelt never intended SS to be the only source of retirement funds, or even very comfortable, but I disagree that it has grown beyond that.
"The lesson Washington has never learned is that universal entitlements are by their very nature poison to an economic system, never mind a culture of individual rights."
Dogmatic bullshit, Tom. A hand-wave argument if I ever heard one.
"Given these solid financial examples of how entitlements have turned out so far, [....]

Speak for yourself, you working stiff! I work to get out. I love my job most of the times, and find it very fulfilling, but I'll be damned if I want to do this for 30 more years- and changing careers isn't much of an answer for me.
"Hey, I saw those fingers crossing out there!"
Who, Me?
