Some of the changes you're talking about sound reasonable, although God knows if the poor dupes back in Roosevelt's time knew their tax rate was going to end up being 12-14 percent on the first $10,000 of income,* they would have pushed his wheelchair off a bridge.
The budget, the Social Security structure, the demographics, and every other factor of Social Security is almost exactly the same now as it was when five or six years ago.
The Democrats insisted Social Security was in trouble and needed something to fix it. Sure as hell, we couldn't cut income taxes with Social Security on its last legs.
Now, Bush makes it an issue and suddenly literally dozens of sources, experts, organizations and others pour out of the woodwork to declare that Social Security is just fine as it is, isn't in trouble, never WAS in trouble, and where the hell could Bush have come up with the looney idea that it was? Where the hell were they back then?
So, keep those taxes going, keep those old folks living to 90, 100, 110. No problem. None at all. Never was. Move along.
