No, it sure doesn't.

It's true there's nothing material on the table; Bush's reelection isn't hostage to public opinion anymore (the way it's supposed to be).

But I, and a lot of other people, aren't going to unclamp our jaws from Bush's leg just yet. First, there's the need to keep the focus on the misdeeds of the NeoRepublican-in-Chief to support the effort to break the NeoRepublican's deathgrip on Congress. We don't want to be distracted by the way they're throwing Bush to the wolves and suddenly distancing themselves. Bush may be the head Neo, but we need to dispose of the entire body, not just cut off the head. We don't want the cabal to continue with business-as-usual behind another front man.

Second, there's the prospect of an impeachment if there's a non-Republican Congress after the next election. The betting is that it'll be a joint Bush-Cheney bumpersticker impeachment. Whether that would be a good idea depends on who becomes Speaker of the House and thus third in line for Bush's throne. In a sense the 2006 election is a Presidential election.

Third is the general principle of keeping Bush under the microscope as long as he's in a position to do further damage, and that means never letting up the pressure. With his history of lying and law-breaking and general propensity for skullduggery even when the straight path would suffice, we can't afford to let down our guard for a moment. Bush could still do a lot of damage in the 2-1/2 years, max, ahead of us.

Fourth is the I-told-you-so factor. Damn, I saw Bush for what he is from day one, a weak conniving doubletalking simpleton without the character to be a used-car salesman, let alone President. The bad vibes coming out of the TV screen in the 2000 election and Bush's subsequent fumbling yet furtive performance was enough to raise the hair on the back of my neck. And what did I get for raising the alarm? Derision, insults, willful partisan blindness. I deserve to gloat now, and I intend to. It's not just Bush who was wrong, it's all his supporters too.

I told you so. I was right. I told you it would turn out like this. But did anybody listen to me? Oh nooooo...and look at the mess we're in. Maybe next time....

So, David, yep, on the surface there's nothing to gain from further beating up Dubya. If it were only Bush Derangement Syndrome, we could stop now. But as I outlined, it's about more than Bush, and the fate of the nation is still in the balance. It's always been about more than BDS.
