"Nobody would deny that it's imposible for news reporting to be absolutely objective, because unless it's a report on a scientific discovery, all news is about the subjective world of people. Neither the participants nor the reporters can be completely objective."
Correct. No person can be completely objective. And I'm not asking that anyone is do the impossible. This the value of looking for "two sides of the issue". It's also the value of having diversity.
"But the RightWing reliance on claims that the media is biased, whether or not as a conscious conspiracy, is nothing more than making excuses for the failures of Republicans. It's just the small-minded whine that if only people knew the "truth" about Republicans, nobody'd ever vote Democrat."
This is silly. Let give one example why this is silly. If I knew the truth about Micheal Jackson I might like him as a person more than I do now, though I might know that he belongs in jail.
"Yeah, sure. One point of view is that the more people know about Republicans, the less likely they are to vote for them, but that's just my opinion...based on knowing a lot about Republicans and their beliefs. Here at the Zone I get the "truth" as Republicans see it entirely unfiltered by the media, and you haven't converted me. What makes you think that the media is reponsible for the wider failure of Republicanism to sweep the country?"
Sorry, Robert, I'm not a Republican. Kind of destroys this idea of yours doesn't?? But I'm not Dem either. Nor do I have any interest in trying to make you or anyone vote one way or the other.
"And are you and Tom really more open-minded because you're convinced that everything said in the "MSM" is "bullshit", and you believe only the approved RightWing sources like Fox "News" and press releases from a Republican White House? Oh, puhleeeeeeease!"
In say last year, I've watched about as much Fox news as MSM or CNN. But I don't watch much of any news. The only thing vaguely good about Fox news is it might offer a slightly different view.
As far as "open-minded" goes. I don't claim that I or Tom were more "open-minded"- I'm not even convinced that "open-minded" is such a good thing. I would say that Tom apparently has more patience than I do. I think the ability to listen and not quickly assume you "know something" about who you are listening to is a virtue.
