I am quiet aware of the uncomprehendible size of the universe. I have been a student of Astronomy since I was 12.
One Fall night, during my college years, I was locking up the observatory after teaching an Astronomy lab. Every one had left. The sky, north of Nacogdoches, was alive with the stars. I laid on the hood of my car and looked up at the sky so that it filled up my whole field of view.
I could see several planets that allowed me to ‘see’ the plane of our Solar System.
I could see the Milky Way Galaxy stretched across my vision. I saw how the plane of our Solar System oriented with the plane of our galaxy. For the first time in my life I really saw how big our galaxy was and realized how small our Earth is.
I completely understand the vastness of the universe and how we are a small part of it. That is also how I know we are such a rare and precious thing.
