Most people do not have the educational skills or the social security
to handle a vast, indifferent Universe.
It may be vast, but how do you know that it's indifferent? It might be filled with advanced beings that care about you deeply, just as some humans care about life on Earth deeply. Certainly you can't rule that out, and the laws of physics have already conspired to make your life wonderful, convenient and cushy, no?
Well, at least briefly wonderful. Well, not everyone's life, not everyone is as lucky as you. Some people take that model of the universe, and try to propagate it. It's quite possible that's why the universe is here, but that too doesn't tell you much about the benevolence, malevolence or indifference of any putative 'creators'.
