If you have not already, you should check out Frank White's book
titled The Overview Effect. Poor Scott Carpenter never flew in space
again after his Mercury Aurora 7 flight in 1962 because of mistakes he
made when he went all human in orbit and became entranced with his
new perspective of our planet in space.
The vastness of the Universe has also inspired fear in astronauts.
The later Apollo missions had the astronauts performing an
EVA while heading back to Earth from the Moon to retrieve film from
the Service Module. One astronaut in Andy Chaikin's 1994 book, A
Man on the Moon, said he was so afraid and overwhelmed by the
utter blackness he saw all around him that he gripped the SM's
handrails for dear life, because he did not want to end up floating
off into that black void.
