And yet all along people knew cigarettes caused cancer.

That the cigarette companies did was provide people who didn't want to believe it with "studies" which reinforced what they wanted to believe.

Anyone approaching the available information with an open mind knew that cigarettes caused cancer and knows that Man is one of the big drivers of global warming.
