Yes, you could call that progress, but is the US really in the business of invading sovereign nations in order to guarantee regular airline service? You might as well say we should have supported Mussolini's Italy because "he made the trains run on time."
You won't find me defending Democrats, liberals, conservatives, atheists or anyone else who was hoodwinked by the obvious lies used to justify our invasion of Iraq.
Wrong is wrong, no matter whodunnit. And it is still wrong.
As I've mentioned elsewhere, partisan squabbling only serves as a red herring to distract attention from the real scoundrels, who play both sides against the middle, an old , but still viable tactic.
As I noted, it was our vaunted free press which headlined all the scare stories about Iraq's threat, on the one hand, while burying dissenting viewpoints by the Bush administration's own experts, on the other.
As you may recall, the truth about Saddam's reputed WMD was there in the fine print for anyone who bothered to read carefully and thoroughly. The specters of yellowcake, aluminum tubes, centrifuges, transatlantic model planes, and all the rest of the scare stories were the stuff of daily headlines and breathless expert commentary on Fox, CNN, the major networks, and the major dailies.
Further, during the run-up to the vote on authorization of force - to cite just one egregious example - calls to Senator Diane Feinstein's (D-Cal.) office were running approximately 50 to 1 against the impending vote, but Sen. Feinstein voted against the wishes of her constituency, and cast her vote in favor of the invasion.
In the aftermath of the invasion, large numbers of Iraqis have died, the US is bogged down in the Middle East and Central Asia with a growing list of casualties, and the country is going broke.
If you think that all of this sacrifice and suffering is justified on the basis of improved Iraqi airline service, well, there you are.
At any rate, none of this really has much to do with the debate about the theory of Anthropogenic Global Warming except that once again, it is the media who are broadcasting one side of the story, while downplaying or ignoring the other.
