Not just two, Jody.
1) should the society be run for the greatest good of as many as possible
or
2) should the society be run so that there is no limit to what the best of us can achieve
There's more:
3) Should the society be run so as to accumulate as much power and wealth to the leadership and government as possible?
It doesn't take much historical study to see that #3 societies are not uncommon.
It also doesn't take much historical study to realize that almost every one of these societies accumulated this power while pretending to have #1 as their goal.
More destruction has been done in the name of "The People" than almost any other cause.
