Flame » in reply to Observations

Hey, I've done it too.

Though not usually with fireworks.

I can't speak for the rest of the crowd, but here's how it happens for me (forgive any repeats, I haven't read all the responses, yet).

1) I hate repeating myself. When I catch myself repeating the same arguement over and over, I feel genuine shame.
2) When I see others repeating the same arguement (or irrational insult, or whatever) over and over (gleefully) I feel negative things toward that author. When this builds to actual anger, I catch myself playing the hate-game and this causes me to feel genuine shame.
3) I can't figure out flames. I can't see why a deliberate descent into irrational name-calling should be considered nobel. I like discussion. I like logic. I realize this is a personal problem, as a lot of folks I know and love can't get enough of this flamy stuff. Even so, I can get pulled in sometimes when I think that someone is bullying someone else. Again, it makes me feel ugly.
4) I've got another severe hot-button: I hate being ignored. If I post something and get responses that have nothing to do with my post it pisses me off. On a few occasions I've played the game of trying to drag the other poster, kicking and screaming, back to the point. Only to have them (infuriatingly) repeat over and over what their first post was about (Larry is a master at this tactic. I've gone around and around the block with Dan a few times, thinking that he just hasn't quite grasped what I'm saying, and if I can come up with the perfect description, he will get it. I've come to the conclusion that Dan and I are just on different wavelengths, and I should let it go.). This is another personal problem, I know. But the more I invest, the more emotional I get.
5) I have a nasty, sarcastic, provocative side that takes control whenever I'm not paying attention. Sometimes it draws sharp responses from others that I don't expect and don't understand till I re-read what I said. When I get the feeling that I've hurt somebody's feelings, I feel bad about it.

Bottom line is, when this place starts to make me feel ugly, it's time to take a break. If this translates to politics, somehow then that's interesting, I guess.

Anyhow, you're all a bunch of fucking lunatics, so who gives a flyer? (gonna have to do pennance for that one, too)
