Even a deuterium-tritium fusion reaction produces much less radioactive material than fission

If nuclear fusion can achieve economic viability (this has NOT been established) then the nuclear waste issue goes away. The most serious nuclear waste from fusion is the fast neutron activated structure from the reactor. However that sort of radioactivity is only a public safety issue for about 50 years. The biggest problem with fission is disposing of transuranic waste (that's seriously radioactive for thousands of years). The best way to get rid of transuranics is to burn them in a nuclear reactor and not bury them.
