Comparing historical subsidies for various energy sources is relevant to determining what promise each industry holds for the future. The huge subsidies that nuclear and fossil fuel industries have received give them a leg up on alternative energy - it's not that those industries are innately superior. The historical comparison is just another reason why governmental support for alternative energy, especially in promoting research, is justified.
