Pure electric cars are not economical because the batteries are too expensive. The automobile industry tried to crack that nut but failed. Hybrid cars offer no economic advantage based upon the current price of gasoline but that will change as gas gets more expensive. Fuel cell cars running on hydrogen will become interesting when a safe hydrogen storage technology becomes available along with a hydrogen distribution infrastructure.
