re: Money has better uses.

When gas gets too expensive, people will choose not to buy it. Whether hydrogen fuel is available or not, people will also choose not to buy it if they can't afford it.

Remember, doing nothing IS definitely an option here.

I don't think so. Can you afford to not have a car? I can't. Mass transit doesn't come to within walking distance of my house, nor does it go to the places I need to go for work on a decent schedule. I don't think a lot of people live within walking distance from their workplace, and there is very little options otherwise available. At best people will cut down on their use, but people still have to get to work. If fuel prices go up, then people will manage because not going to work is not an option. 5 years ago I couldn't imagine what life would be like buying gas at 2.30/gallon. Yet I have acclimitized to it and feel I'm getting a bargain whenever I pay $2.20. I suspect as long as the price doesn't sharply increase in a short span of time, we will acclimitize ourselves, wages will be corrected to compensate and we will keep on keeping on. Hopefully it won't be too painless, so we can get some viable alternatives worked out before the increases in fuel prices are on par with how my medical insurance increased over the past 10 years. Now that's highway robbery.
