Current Events » in reply to :) Just waiting for irrelavent comparisons to WW2

Nobody said freedom was cheap.

People die in wars. How many civilains died in Kosovo? Do you blame Bill Clinton? Why isn't there the same media preoccupation with body counts when the Democrats are doing the high altitude bomb dropping?

How many deaths were there in Rhwanda because nobody in the West had the courage to take military action? I've heard that there were as many as 2 million. How many are dying in The Sudan as we speak because dictators and thrugs like Sadam know they can get away with genocide?

Our elected leaders made the call that going to war in Iraq, which would certainly cost lives in the short run (in this case, 30,000 or so), would ultimately save lives in the long run. Do you know for certain they were wrong?

So lets do a what if:

What if there was no US intervention in Iraq?

Alternate timeline:

1. UN Sanctions stay in place. Many Iraqis starve and/or die because of poor healthcare in the years 2004-???.
2. UN Oil for Food program continues. funds diverted to Terrorist and organized crime activities the world over in the years 2004-???.
3. Sadam stranglehold continues for a decade or more longer. Many Kurds, Shites, and others are exterminated in the years 2004-2010.
4. Sadam dies and eventually leaves two waring sons in charge of Iraq. Civil war ensues and perhaps 100,000-300,000 die in the years 2010-2020. Does the Civil war spill over into Turkey? Iran? Syria? Jordan?
5. Eventually one side wins the civil war through shear brutality. Iraq still has a madman dictator in power.

So you think the world was better off? Invading Iraq and killing 30,000 was unjustified and immoral?

And note all this assumes that nowhere in the timeline does the dictator(s) decide to launch an attack against Isreal to shore-up his "image" in the Arab world.

Maybe you could come up with a more peaceful alternate timeline for Iraq? I'd love to see it.
