Current Events » in reply to Freedom and democracy...and where would that be?

that's not really the point here

I am prepared to put up with increased police presence, even though I personally find it irritating, but accept it as necessary when there is no alternative.

I'm travelling to Sydney next week where entire suburbs are being locked down, cars and people stopped and searched etc. etc. - in order to prevent racist ratbags (of both arabic and caucasian background) bashing the hell out of each other, not to mention anyone else who happens to pass by. At a visceral level I don't like a big police presence but in the absence of a cohesive decent community there is no other choice, hence I fully support the cops and their increased powers to deal with this ugly stuff.

Best to strip the original question down to something like this: let's assume you would get a pure and balanced democracy as the result of an invasion - assume no complications or corruption.

Could anyone still say, "this is worth 30,000 deaths"?

(This is the sort of thing which is common in war, eg Hiroshima - but I still don't accept Iraq can be compared to WW2)

OTOH if Iran continues their way, and if it's clear that direction is actually supported by the populace, then to hell with them and they will have asked for what's coming to them.
