The big paradigm change of 9/11 was having our noses rubbed in the fact that just "sitting back and watching" wasn't going to make us immune from psychotics and tyrants. It's a lesson the U.S. has had to learn the hard way more than once.
Israel took out Iraq's nuclear capacity a long time ago. Without that action, Saddam almost certainly would have been a nuclear power when Kuwait was invaded. Thanks to the first Gulf War, and not just letting the Middle Eastern countries "duke it out," The United Nations got the opportunity to dismantle Saddam's second, more secret nuclear program, one that nobody knew existed at that level. Without that, Saddam would have had nuclear weapons by the time 9/11 came about.
We could have let North Korea devour South Korea, or the communists take over pretty much all of Indochina, and a lot of South and Central America. The radical Islamists have been quite up front about their international goals.
At what point does it become impossible to just "let it be?"

- Well, they were going to die sometime anyway, so Bush isn't really responsible.
