Clinton was the most Republican Democrat to have been in the White House since Woodrow Wilson.

Republicans were progressives back then.

Clinton made the Republicans furious because he took welfare reform away from them and balanced the budget to boot. His big liberal initiative, reform of health care, fell on its face, but I personally think that the presentation was to blame for that.

His big mistake was to violate the adultery commandment, to sin the Democratic way. If he had ignored the Golden Rule, to sin the Republican way, he would have made a less attractive target. The "bearing false witness" commandment is pretty much a wash, with both parties taking bows.

The last big name with both big power and big influence in elected government that liberals will recognize as their own was Tip O'Neill. We've had liberals with big power and liberals with big influence, but not at the same time. Ted Kennedy is a workhorse, and a symbol, but he has had very little real power outside of those who agree with him except as a lightning rod for many years.
